The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Wednesday sees the launch of the Commonwealth Games, an 11 day athletic treat with enough gymnastics competition to soothe the most insatiable of acrobatic appetites. The 20th instalment of the Games takes place in Glasgow, with the competition returning to British soil for the first time since Manchester 2002. At The Zone we can barely contain our excitement! So we’re giving you an outline of all things gymnastics over the next couple of weeks to fully prepare you for the events coming out of Glasgow! First of all the gymnasts will be competing in artistic and rhythmic disciplines, with rhythmic events taking place between the 24th and the 26th of July, and the artistic competition scheduled for the 28th of July to the 1st of August. Over this 9-day period the BBC are going Commonwealth-crazy, scheduling over 500 hours of combined TV and radio coverage, to ensure you don’t miss a minute of the action! We’ve included a link to the Glasgow 2014 website, and more handy links to the scheduling and results pages for both the rhythmic and artistic events, to help you manage your time effectively! Of course, the Commonwealth Games is the only major multi-sport event where Great Britain competes separately as its individual countries. This means we’ll witness a mouth-watering split of London 2012’s bronze medal winning GB team, with England’s Max Whitlock and Louis Smith directly competing with Dan Purvis in team events, who competes for Scotland. Alongside these fan-favourites, a host of British stars will participate for their chance to win a place on the podium, including Sam Oldham, Hannah Whelan, Ruby Harrold, Dan Keatings, Clinton Purnell, Harry Owen, Raer Theaker, Angel Romaeo and Emma White.
